THE BACKGROUND OF THE NEED FOR A SYMMETRICAL SHAPER
During the development of improvements in my prototypes I began to see the necessity for the development of a flat shaper. My foldover shaper presented many problems. Since the symmetry of the cam must produce a symmetrical trimming pattern on the blades of the reed, it was quite difficult to find the longitudinal center of the foldover shaped piece and place it on the precise longitudinal center of the cane barrel. When I profiled the piece of cane first, I was not able to clamp it on the foldover shaper so that the trimmed cam pattern would be exactly in the middle of the foldover shaper.
I solved those placement problems with the development of my flat shaper. There are two precisely placed small circular shaper marking plugs that match the same precisely placed plugs on the cane barrel. It is a simple operation to shape the cane without folding it and press the marking plugs into each end of the shaped piece of cane while it is in my flat shaper. The shaped piece of cane can be taken from the shaper and placed on the raised plugs in their precise locations on the cane barrel. With the shaped piece clamped in its place on the cane barrel symmetrical profiling can be accomplished.
